Homeschool Options and Home School Programs

What is homeschooling, how home education differs from online school, and which of the main home school programs fits your family's time, budget and qualification goals.

Six ways families homeschool

Nearly every homeschooling family uses one of these, or a blend of two.

Most flexible

Parent-led homeschooling

You choose curriculum, pace and assessment. Lowest cost, highest parent time. Tutors fill the subjects you would rather not teach.
Most structured

Online school / K12 online school

A virtual school teaches, assesses and reports. Timetabled and recognised, but far less adaptable to an uneven learner.
Recognised records

Accredited homeschool programs

Third-party programs that issue transcripts and diplomas. Most valuable from high school onwards.
Shared teaching

Hybrid and co-op models

Part-time in-person classes or parent-shared teaching, with the rest at home. Strong for socialisation and practical subjects.
Subject specialists

Online homeschool programs

Live or recorded courses bought subject by subject and slotted into your own plan.
Interest-led

Unschooling

No fixed curriculum; learning follows the child's questions and projects, with qualifications planned separately.

Choosing between homeschooling and online school

The trade-off is control versus convenience.

Choose online school if

  • You need a timetable and reporting handled for you
  • Both parents work full time
  • Your child is at or near grade level across subjects
  • You want a recognised school record without building it yourself

Choose homeschooling if

  • Your child's levels differ a lot between subjects
  • You want pace, depth or content under your control
  • You are travelling, relocating or on an unusual schedule
  • Wellbeing or learning differences make a fixed timetable costly

Requirements vary by board, country, examination and institution and can change over time. Always verify current eligibility requirements with the relevant official authority.
